This is the most amazing miracle I have ever witnessed! There was a loggerhead nest in North Swan Beach that people were taking turns watching. It hatched last night! There were 116 eggs and close to that many baby turtles. One started by pushing it's way through the sand, the sand it pushed into the nest helped the next turtle out and so on and so forth until they were all out and scurrying towards the ocean. There were close to 50 people there to help them. Everyone took turns flattening the beach and building a wide walkway with 4 inch sides so the turtles could get from the dunes to the ocean safely. Traffic was stopped and there could only be red light. The turtles see any other color light as bright and view it as the horizon so they go towards it. The red light they only see as dark. Once they got to the ocean, they would get washed back approx. 3 times and then they would learn to swim. They swim for 24 hours before stopping to eat and rest. By this time they are out by the gulf stream. Many thanks to all that helped the little ones survive the first leg of their long journey!
